There are many reasons to have a "Bug Out Bag" but having the right equipment in that bag can make the difference between surviving or thriving. Thriving in nature is probably not a realistic expectation but we can take certain steps to improve the quality of our situation.

If you are not familiar with the term evacuated tube solar collector then you should look into them. There is nothing more efficient for heating water quickly and when it comes to space heating they reign supreme. These cylinders of glass have been formed with a vacuum between the walls with a black coated copper absorber. These cylinders can heat water in a very short period of time, but they are also being used to cook food. The system pictured below is not suitable for transport but it is something that can be used at the homestead.

Solar Cooker

The concept is fairly simple. The heat that is generated inside the tube heats a metal open-faced tray of food. The added benefit of this cooker is that it can also be used to disinfect drinking water.

Pedal Generator

This portable generator is portable, light weight (4 pds) and can produce about 20 watts. This is not a lot of power but it can operate LED space lighting and recharge cell phones (if service is still available). It stows flat and will easily fit in a bug out bag.

Self-Powered Flashlight

This little gem is not only a hand-powered flashlight, it can be used to charge cell phones and it has a solar cell for assisting the charge.
