The best power packs for camping can turn a crisis into a manageable situation. We use them for general lighting, to power small appliances, operate a radio and even a small TV.

I have experienced several power outages as a home owner lasting days not hours.  The final straw was when we went without power for a week, no heat, no hot water, no lighting and it was a bone chilling 16 degrees outside.  Since then I have had a whole house 16 KW natural gas generator installed, installed a solar off-grid unit and purchased a small portable generator and several portable power packs.  I must of scared the power outage Gods because I have not lost power since and that is fine with me, I would rather be prepared and never use them than to be without power again.

Not everyone is going to go to that expense or involvement but I consider it necessary to at least have one portable power pack that is always on charge and ready for use. I also would recommend adding a solar panel to recharge that power pack in case power is not restored for a few days.

Campers and outdoor enthusiasts will find comfort in having a reliable source of light that can be easily packed in.

Portable solar power packs are just the thing.

Anatomy of a Portable Solar Generator

Portable solar generators  provide a clean, quiet source of portable electric power for home use. A properly sized power pack with an adequate storage battery will provide an efficient AC power source.

There are four basic components to a portable solar generator; solar panel, charge controller, power inverter and storage battery.

Solar Panel

These are some of the best solar panels you can buy. Renogy ships very quickly and they are shipped in foam lined cardboard boxes. I have never received a damaged or blemished solar panel yet. These panels are more than sufficient for a small portable solar generator and will work just as well on your roof top. Here is an Amazon link to the ones I use: <here>

A charge controller diverts current to either the battery when it is discharging or to the load when the battery is fully charged.

Charge Controller
Power Inverter

Power Inverters convert DC into AC power. They are rated in Watts. There are modified sine wave inverters and pure sine wave inverters. If you intend to operate LED lights , motors and small resistive loads then a modified sine wave will work fine. If you intend to operate sensitive electronics such as a HDTV or even some power tool rechargers then you will want to purchase a pure sine wave inverter. Here are some descent inverters that won't break the bank.

Solar Battery

The storage battery is just as the name indicates, a storage source for the generated DC power. When the battery is charged it is now available to converted for household use. The power inverter is connected directly to the battery and the 12 vdc is converted to AC power. The capacity of the battery is measured in AH (ampere hours) the higher the AH the longer the battery can supply AC power.
